MODELING IS A BUSINESS

Modeling is a business and Models are the products.

It is how good the product is, how it is packaged and how it is marketed that will depend upon the success of a model.

It is a business where some models do get discovered, but most have to work very hard to become successful. It is the hard work and dedication to this business that will determine ones success. One has to invest in themselves and their career.

There is a lot of controversy around paying money to become a model. But you do need to invest in yourself if you want to become one. You need a portfolio and you have two options.

You can choose to have professional photos taken with a professional Photographer, Make-up Artist and possibly a professional Stylist/Art Director or you can have a friend or relative take photos of you for free.

However back to a models packaging...

If the product (you) is exceptional and luck is on your side you might get taken in by a modeling agency without a professional portfolio. But when you are competing with many other people to be discovered your chances would definately be increased with a professional portfolio.

Your business is you.

MODELING - More than a pretty face

When most people think of models they think all you need is a great face and body to match. But in fact it is a high pressured profession that requires a lot of knowledge of the industry as well as skills in sales, fashion and interpersonal skills. Because of its competetive nature, one must be knowledgable in order to be even remotely successful. Also, this day in age you often see a variety of models with an unusual look; often called a signature face; a face that commands attention and is interesting to look at. As a teacher and consultant to aspiring models, I have come to the realization that I must first educate them that this is a "real" job that will require work.
T.V.shows such as "America's Next Top Model" have made the general public more aware of this career even if it is a bit extreme and overly dramatized.
Modeling can be hard work and sometimes having a pretty face helps but only if you have the rest of the package too!
